This is what happened to Anna in 1933.Īnna is too busy with her schoolwork and tobogganing to listen to the talk of Hitler. Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in it any longer, and you found, to your surprise, that your own father was one of those people. This beautiful new edition celebrates the fifty year anniversary of an adventure that Michael Morpurgo called “The most life-enhancing book you could ever wish to read.” This semi-autobiographical classic, written by the beloved Judith Kerr, tells the story of a Jewish family escaping Germany in the days before the Second World War. Genghis Khan by Norman Itzkowitz5/26/2023 The topic-and the methods of destruction used make this "Wicked History" an irresistible read for the bloodthirsty adolescent in all of us. Along the way to building his vast armies, he revolutionized warfare, popularized the "scorched earth" policy as a means of subjugating local populations, and oversaw the killing of millions. Temujin, the young khan in training, began his career by murdering his brother, then proceeded to destroy everyone and everything that might interfere with his becoming one of the greatest conquerors in history. It is little wonder, when one considers his modus operandi as described in this action-packed biography fleshed out from the few period details available. A hero to present-day Mongolians for uniting the barbaric tribes of the vast Asian steppes and imposing upon them their first laws and written language, to the rest of the then-civilized world his name was synonymous with chaos and terror. But Genghis Khan did not need rumors to make his enemies fear him. Rumors about the Mongol leader's ruthlessness followed him from East Asia to eastern Europe. They destroyed cities, burned villages, and turned farmers into homeless wanderers. His Mongol warriors were the fastest, most efficient army on earth. Genghis Khan set out to conquer the world. Paulo freire we make the road by walking5/26/2023 My intent is to add to the ongoing dialogues of approaching science education as a practice of critical consciousness and liberatory world making. By examining ACT UP through a Freirean lens, I explore themes of relationality, social epistemology, consensus, and dissensus that emerged when a social movement engaged with science to achieve its goal. Paulo Freire’s pedagogy was developed alongside social movements. ACT UP is a well-studied example of when non-specialists engaged with science and scientific knowledge making to shift power and policy. Current practices in science education do not adequately prepare educators and students to challenge and interrupt injustices that we are emersed in. The purpose is to draw from where there have been processes of engagement of sociopolitical action in science and how these spaces can become meaningful entry points to take toward making a “sociopolitical turn” in science education, as well as in science more broadly. This article explores ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) through a Freirean lens of critical consciousness, dialogue, and transformation.
